CIVIL ENGINEERING, The Mother of Engineering

By Prof Dileep Jigyasi

Civil Engineering is the oldest branch of Engineering, as the civilization on earth starts with its presence the very first requirement for  human after food & water is a shelter to protect himself & his loved ones (Family & Animals) from tough & adverse weather conditions . I am sure the First Engineer on Earth must be a Civil Engineer.

Civil engineering is a professional technical discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways.

When technical education started civil engineering is the second branch introduced after Military Engineering. If we talk about non military engineering it’s the first branch of engineering introduced in Technical Institutes.

Once way back in past when someone says he is an engineer everyone is sure he or she is a civil engineer. Among the three core branches of engineering, Civil will be almost in top for most of the time. Civil Engineers are multifaceted persons those can manage all type of works involved in any infrastructural projects & also lead the project in coordination with team of other engineering discipline whether it’s a residential project or industrial project.

In 80s as we have all Government Engineering Colleges in all the states & in   most of them maximum seats are in Civil Branch. Then during 90s there will be slight change as new branches introduced, little bit of slag in civil field due to tough economic conditions worldwide people looking for job opportunities in other field of engineering.

But again as new economic reforms introduced new projects like smart city ,metro projects ,expansion in railway projects ,new airports also new infrastructure development in cities due to  increase of population in cities as people moving there for higher education & better living opportunity  given a positive boost to Civil Engineering field  .

There are a number of sub-disciplines within the broad field of civil engineering. General civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers to design grading, drainage, water supply, sewer service, dams, electric and communications supply. General civil engineering is also referred to as site engineering, a branch of civil engineering that primarily focuses on converting a tract of land from one usage to another. Site engineers spend time visiting project sites, meeting with stakeholders, and preparing construction plans. Civil engineers apply the principles of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering and construction engineering to residential, commercial, and industrial and public works projects of all sizes and levels of construction.

Civil Engineering is one of the right choices for career building as we can have job opportunities in government sector, private sector & also as an entrepreneur to start your own enterprise, You can become a Job Giver Not Job seeker.
